Blind Spots

Appropriately trained and experienced personnel recognise the dangers when reversing, less experienced operators may not. When reversing, even small trailers can have significant blind spots where visibility is reduced both behind and to the sides of them.

Failure to spot an obstruction can endanger the life of personnel or damage the trailer. Consider the use of audible reverse warning aids and additional lighting especially in low light conditions.

Always check behind when reversing to ensure the area is clear of obstructions and personnel. If in any doubt employ the services of a banksman to assist you with your manoeuvre.

Jack knife

Avoid jack knifes when reversing as this will inevitably lead to contact between the trailer and the towing vehicle, resulting in damage to both the towing vehicles tyres and the trailer drawbar.

Bring the towing vehicle and trailer to a stop. Always position the towing vehicle and trailer in a straight-ahead position wherever possible. Check that there are no obstructions or persons in the tipping area. For trailers with steering axles ensure the wheels are in the straight-ahead position

Select the towing vehicles tipping control and raise the trailer body, control the speed to suit the type of material being carried. If an independently operated tailgate is fitted operate this from the towing vehicle as the body is raised. Slowly drive forward to ensure the loaded material is fully discharged.

Note: the tailgate cannot be raised until the lifting of the body has commenced. Stop the towing vehicle and fully lower the body and close the tailgate before driving off.

Always lower the trailer body when leaving the trailer. To eliminate damage to the rear door, keep the full load pressure off the rear door when tipping.

Trailers fitted with a grain chute should only be partly tipped when unloading and the grain chute is in operation.

 

Hydraulic tailgate operation

Ensure the tailgate hydraulic connection is made to the towing vehicle. Check that there are no obstructions or persons in the tailgate danger zone before operating the tailgate.

Operate the relevant control to raise the tailgate and to lower it. All trailers equipped with hydraulic tailgates incorporate a safety system which requires the trailer to commence tipping before the tailgate can be raised. When lowering the trailer ensure the tailgate is fully closed before the trailer body is fully lowered.

What’s new?

Increased Pipe Capacity

The newly updated open pipe holder design now allows for multiple pipes to be easily stowed on the swan neck, eliminating the need for the previous tube design, which could only accommodate up to five pipes. This change removes the need for a double-tube setup when carrying more than five pipes by simplifying storage.

Improved Operator Accessibility
We’ve also relocated the ‘Push to Shunt’ button from the chassis. Previously it required crouching underneath the trailer. The button is now positioned on the swan neck holder itself. This makes activation quicker, easier, and safer for the operator.

These enhancements are proof that even the smallest design improvements can make a big impact on productivity and comfort in the field.

When a 40 or 50 km/h tractor is pulling a trailer, it’s vital that the trailer’s braking system can cope with the speed plus weight-imposed loads and still be durable and reliable in-service. Therefore, selecting the correct ‘foundation’ brake type and size is a critical first step.

What is the foundation brake?

The brake drum and shoe form the ‘foundation’ of the trailer’s braking system. Brake capacity depends on drum diameter and shoe width. Higher load capacity axles and/or those used at higher speeds are fitted with larger foundation brakes. The wrong choice for your intended speed and maximum load could prove costly.

What is an ‘Agricultural’ specification brake?

Agricultural foundation brakes are fitted to lower capacity axles and are usually smaller, for example: ø300 x 60mm or ø400 x 80mm. Because they use ‘flat’-type operating cams which don’t provide very progressive brake control, they are unsuitable for use above speeds of 40 km/h. Typically, agricultural brakes are fitted to smaller trailers.

What is a ‘Commercial’ brake?

Commercial foundation brakes generally use larger drums and shoes, for example: ø420 x ø180, ø420 x ø220 and ø310 x ø190 (on low loaders), which are designed to withstand higher braking loads. However, their most important feature is an ‘S’-shape operating cam which provides more progressive brake control. The size of the drum is an indication of how these brakes can dissipate the heat produced during higher-speed braking. Depending on the size of the air chamber or brake ram fitted, commercial axles/brakes will enable the trailer to achieve 50% braking efficiency when fully laden. Commercial brakes are the perfect match for a modern tractor.

It wasn’t that long ago you’d only see a sheet over a trailer if rain was going to spoil the harvested crops.

Attitudes to uncovered loads have changed dramatically over recent times. Farmers delivering to mills are now expected to arrive with a covered load, or they can be turned away.

Whether farm or construction, uncovered loads are now regularly pulled over. Under the Road Traffic Act, it is important that bulk loads are not shed or blown onto public roads. However, legislation aside, surely it makes perfect sense to protect whatever is in the trailer and other road users?

This sheet is stored neatly on either the near side or off side of the trailer and is operated from within the tractor, in line with the Grain Storage Health and Safety Regulations. Safety Features

If the Red ‘Supply’ line breaks or disconnects (and there is pressure in the trailer reservoir), the Relay Emergency valve will apply the trailer brakes automatically (i.e. Failsafe operation). Always check this happens whenever the trailer is unhitched from the tractor.

If the tractor’s braking system fails (or the engine stalls), the driver can still apply the trailer brakes using the tractor’s Secondary brake control (either the foot brake, the Parking brake or an Emergency brake control).

Important Do’s and Don’ts
When coupling / uncoupling, to keep the trailer brakes applied for as long as possible, ALWAYS disconnect the Red line first (before the Yellow line) and re-connect it last.

ALWAYS apply the mechanical Parking Brake. Don’t rely on trailer air reservoir pressure to keep the brakes of an unhitched trailer applied.

NEVER connect both hydraulic and air brakes at the same time. Use either one system OR the other.

ALWAYS ensure the Shunt valve releases when the air brakes are next connected: otherwise, the trailer’s reservoir won’t refill and you will have no trailer brakes!
