
The short answer is yes, in many cases, however, compatibility is key.
The age of the tractor itself isn’t necessarily the deciding factor. What matters is the braking and electrical technology fitted to the tractor, the braking system specified on the trailer, and how those two systems are designed to work together.
Before pairing an older tractor with a new trailer, several checks should be made:
1. What braking system does the tractor have?
Check the tractor’s pneumatic trailer-brake arrangement, connections and operating pressures.
2. What braking system does the trailer use?
Establish whether the trailer uses conventional pneumatic braking with mechanical load sensing, ABS, EBS or another configuration.
3. Does the tractor support the trailer’s electronic functions?
If the trailer uses EBS, establish whether the tractor has the appropriate electrical connection and compatibility.
4. What will the trailer be carrying?
Consider the trailer’s typical and maximum operating weights, as well as the type of material being transported.
5. How will the trailer be used?
A trailer working predominantly in fields may have different operating requirements from one regularly travelling on public roads between farms, construction sites or quarries.
6. Will the trailer be used behind more than one tractor?
This is particularly important for contractors and fleet operators.
If a trailer will move between several tractors, the compatibility of each tractor should be considered.
It’s also worth looking beyond the current tractor. For contractors and fleet operators, consider which tractors may operate the trailer in the future, as a trailer can remain in service for many years while tractors are replaced.
