Hydraulic tailgates can create serious crushing, trapping and falling-object hazards. Although the tailgate is operated from the tractor cab, it is essential to ensure the area is clear before operating.
Before operating
- Check the tailgate, hinges, hydraulic components and locking mechanisms for damage, wear or leaks.
- Ensure the tractor and trailer are secure and on suitable ground.
- Check that no person, animal, vehicle or obstruction is within the tailgate’s movement or discharge area.
- Make sure you have sufficient visibility of the tailgate and surrounding area from the cab.
When operating
- Operate the tailgate only from the designated controls in the tractor cab.
- Keep the tailgate under observation while it is moving.
- Stop immediately if anyone enters the danger area.
- Never allow anyone underneath, behind or within the movement path of the tailgate.
- Never leave the controls unattended while the tailgate is moving.
Maintenance or clearing blockages
Never rely on hydraulic pressure alone to support a raised tailgate.
Before entering the tailgate’s danger area, follow the isolation procedure and ensure the tailgate is lowered or positively secured using the approved mechanical support or locking device.
Never attempt to clear a blockage, inspect or repair the tailgate while it can move.

Operating from the cab does not remove the risk. Always make sure the danger area is clear before moving the tailgate.
